떡국 or sliced rice cake soup is traditional Korean soup dish during the celebration of the Korean New Year. The dish consists of broth and thinly sliced rice cake (떡, tteok) which is simply flour chunk in bite size. Korean people celebrate New Year’s celebration meal time and it is believed people gain a year of age when they eat it. It is popular dish for the New Year’s day.
The broth is made by simmering the main beef, chicken or port and so on, and seasoned with ganjang or salt and other garnishes such as egg jidan (달걀 지단, egg garnish) and sliced gim (sliced seaweed sheet). The flour chunks are added from cut of long cylinder-shaped garaetteok.
The broth is mild flavor compared to other spicy soup so international people who do not want spicy can eat it well too. It is traditional serving for long historical sense, so is good experiences for them very much.
