What is 명제?

명제 is translated term from English word proposition.

In philosophy, especially in analytic tradition, use of proposition is an important step to do good thinking and arguing about it. Proposition is often as a form of propositional knowledge and its instance is this: “I know the earth is round”. This is statement same meaning with another statement, “The earth is round”. These two statement’s reference is same, indicating “the earth is round”. This is so-called proposition is as a form of information contents, telling about what is knowable by the statement.

Proposition is statement, because it gives sense of knowledge we are talking about. In analytic philosophy, the structure of knowledge is carried out by different statements, but it is conveyance of same reference, so, it is starting point of what we argue on. Philosophical set-around about what is argued on is conveyed by proposition. Into the extent, “propositional attitude” is at issue for some topics.

When we focus on attitude to set the proposition in argument, there is locutions indicating proposition as pro-position, at the realm of philosophical jargon. The original meaning of proposition is the first paragraph’s usage but even that it indicates same logic, fact, knowledge by different statement, but as a usage of metaphysics as meta-physics, pro-position is used term to set forth certain meaning in meta-theory about activity of philosophical insights.

The original meaning of proposition is as informational form of contents are same, and to the extent of jargon, it is understood as attitude of argumentation.

Many analytic philosophical terms are used sometimes in this manner, so it would be helpful when readers take care of it distinctive, more easier reading is possible. So I wrote this post to introduce it.

Please note that attitude in this context is about philosophical capability knowing on our statements either true or fallible, not analyzing personality. So, proposition is significant term to be used.
